Many gyms, pools, and other recreational facilities closed or operated at limited capacity in 2020, and one study conducted early in the pandemic found that overall physical activity for adults was significantly lower than prior to the pandemic. Researchers ranked cities and states by the share of adults who self-reported engaging in leisure-time physical activity—such as running, calisthenics, golf, gardening, or walking for exercise.
