I’d like to introduce myself as the new Editor for the Creative Writing section of The Griffon News. To my knowledge, this will be the first time that a Creative Writing section has appeared in this newspaper. In this section myself and other students interested in Creative Writing will share our short story, poetry, and creative non-fiction pieces. The great thing about creative writing is that it allows for unlimited freedom of expression. As any writer knows, when you write, you uncover aspects of yourself and the world. Traditional news is limited to what actually happens in the world. Contrary to what most people think, creative writing also has its roots in real life. Good creative writing is able to “sell the lie” of the story and in order to do this, it must be somewhat believable.

I truly believe that this section of the Griffon News has the potential to be the most interesting section of the paper. I envision this section of The Griffon News as the spiritual successor of Reach. Reach was a literary journal which took submissions from current and former alumni. Sadly, it was cut due budget problems along with most of the English department's faculty.

As I’m sure most of you are aware, it’s very easy to be negative when times get hard. For better or worse, I’ve been through some adversity and I know that feeling sorry for yourself doesn’t make things better; quite the opposite, in fact. Despite all that Missouri Western has lost, I’m grateful that the rest of the Creative Writing students and I have this unique opportunity to showcase our ability and keep the arts alive at Missouri Western. However, I don’t feel that the opportunity to have creative writing pieces should be limited to the students taking the Griffon Media class.

That’s why we will be accepting submissions from current students and alumni in the writing genres mentioned above, as well as any pieces of art, like Reach did. This is an exciting opportunity to get your work published. There will be an e-edition published every week along with four print editions of the paper published on Sept. 14, Oct. 19, Nov. 9, and Dec. 7. The email address you can submit your work to is

Thanks for your interest in this section and I hope everyone has an amazing semester.
