Looking for something to do on campus? Want to stay healthy and get in the gym? Missouri Western State University Recreation Services is the place to go.
Recreation Services has multiple opportunities that both the students and the community can get involved in on campus.
Emily Ludwig, Director of Recreation Services on campus, had this to share when asked about the recreational services on campus:
“Rec Services covers multiple services," Ludwig said. "We have the Baker Family Fitness Center, Looney Sports Complex, the Thomas C. Egerton Indoor Pool and we oversee the 18-hole disc golf course and walking trails.”
Students can use recreational facilities automatically as a part of their tuition fees. Faculty, staff and retirees, as mentioned on the Rec Services website, are “eligible for a non-student membership.”
For community members, there are two different types of membership: ones for a single person and one for families of four. “Single for a six-month period is $120, six-month for a family of four is $170 and $25 for each additional member, a three-month membership is $80 and a three-month family membership is $105 and $25 for each additional member” as listed on the website.
Ludwig went on to discuss the Rec Services work with setting up intramurals and the Griffon 360 program.
Griffon 360, as seen on the school website, is a “wellness initiative program that ties together the programs of Physical, Spiritual, Emotional, Environmental, Financial, Occupational, Social and Intellectual health.”
Intramurals are sports and leisure activities that students can participate in. They (Rec Services) have a wide variety of different tournaments. The recreational services website lists the following requirements for competing in intramural sports.
“A student must be currently enrolled for at least one hour of credit to be eligible for participation," Ludwig said. "Faculty or Staff members are eligible as long as they are officially recognized by the college. Any person who has been red-shirted or a member of a freshman, junior varsity, or varsity athletic team in either semester at any college or university is ineligible to participate in that specific intramural activity. Only one former varsity athlete is allowed to participate on any team.”
Emily Ludwig continued to explain the upcoming intramurals this semester.
“We have a ping-pong tournament and both 3v3 basketball - men's, women's, and co-ed," Ludwig said. "Ping-pong will be a one-day tournament on December 3rd, the 3v3 will run from December 6-10. All tournaments will take place within the Looney Old Gym.”
Registration for the ping-pong tournament will close on Nov. 30 at midnight and basketball is still open for registration until Dec. 3 at midnight. To register, see Recreation Services' page on the school website.
Ludwig mentioned that the hours vary throughout the year for the facilities.
“The hours vary throughout the year; you can check the website for the information regarding the times,” Ludwig said.
